How Many Items Are in Your Space?

desk_drawer32Does keeping a living or work space organized overwhelm you? Do you look at others and say, “How do they do it?”

In Organizing for the Creative Person: Right-brain Styles for Conquering Clutter, Mastering Time, and Reaching Your Goals, the authors Dorothy Lehmkuhl and Dolores Cotter Lamping suggest there may be over 200,000 items in a home! That number is staggering. However, think of a ream of paper with 500 sheets. With a print-happy attitude we add more items to an already full home or workplace.

The point is to carefully evaluate how we want to reuse, recycle or discard something when we acquire a new item. If there is a surplus of items in a given space, the symptoms will be clutter, disorganization and frustration.

How many items do you estimate are in your home? We would like to hear from you.
