Can Old Athletic Shoes Be Recycled?

shoes_donatedMy closet holds a couple of favorite pairs of athletic shoes that need to be replaced. Like many other I use them for walking and working as well as for weekend wear. A good athletic shoe makes my legs and feet feel great!

According to a fascinating post on footwear, the average American spent $222 on athletic shoes last year. If your worn out athletic shoes have headed to the landfill, consider recycling them through Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program.

Athletic shoes can be dropped off at various collection centers or mailed using a special mailing label. One of the by-products of the recycled shoe material is athletic and playground surfaces.

Who knows? Perhaps someday you may play with your grandchildren on a playground that contains part of your old shoes!

How do you recycle shoes? We would like to hear about your experiences.

  1. I am so happy to know there is a place I can recycle my old shoes. I wear mine right down until there is no tread. They go from walking on the street to doing light aerobics and then to gardening. Thank you.
