How Can I Share a Home Office With My Partner?

istock_000003729707xsmall_pileLast week Janet shared with me how she and her husband shared the same home office. While these two people had their separate work surfaces, sometimes that isn’t possible in a small space.

Here are some ideas to keep the home-based office working for all who use it:

  • Create zones. In addition to the defined work areas, designate areas for processing mail, reading, and other activities if they are to take place in the office. This will help multiple people find and replace needed ites.
  • Store commodities in one area. When printer paper, tape, pens and other necessary supplies are kept in one central area, it is easier for the person in charge of supply replenishment to frequently check that area. No more empty printer trays at 11:00 a.m!
  • Discuss the maintenace of shared equipment. Who is responsible for servicing equipment or ordering printer toner?
  • Honor each other’s space. When each person has an appropriate amount of space for their work, there will be less need for one to encroach on another’s area.
