Get Organized and Be Green

The first step to getting organized is to purge the things you don’t need.  Getting a dumpster is always tempting but in celebration of Earth Day, I want to give you some ideas on what to do with all that stuff you don’t want in your home besides sending it to the landfill.

  • Donate the stuff- This option is good for the community and also tax deductible.  There are always people who need clothing, old toys and home furnishings. When you have a donation, please consider the local women’s shelter and homeless shelters.  They always appreciate the donations.
  • Recycle – or should I say Freecycle.  This is a free service you can sign up for locally that publishes free items to it’s members.  So list away and someone will come and pick up your items from you.
  • Sell the stuff – Ok, so this my be a bit time consuming but it can also be very rewarding.  There are different options for selling your stuff.
    • You can have a garage sale.  I always think this is a good idea but it can be very time consuming.  You get the most bang for your time if you tag along with your neighborhood garage sale because they will do all the advertising for you.
    • Craigslist – This is nice if you just have a few bigger items.  It can become time consuming if you have a lot of little items to sell.
    • As always, use your common sense and be safe when listing your items on Craigslist, Freecycle and in the want ads.
  • Swap your stuff – Host a swap party and have all you friends bring some of their unwanted stuff.  As each person arrives they recieve a ticket for each item they bring in and they get to exchange the tickets for something “new”.  This works great for home furnishings.

I know there are many other ways to get rid of your clutter but this is a good start and I hope it gets you thinking.  Do you have a favorite way to remove the unwanted items from your home?  Happy Earth Day.
