“Mom the Chauffeur” Time can be Learning Time

“A suburban mother’s role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after.”

―Peter De Vries

Now that school and fall sports are in full swing, the time I spend in the car with my kids has increased tremendously.  Every evening we are on our way to a practice or game.  But, I will say I have learned to consider this time to be a gift.  Yes, being in a confined space for 30 minutes with 4 kids can be a gift.  If you have one of them alone, it is a great time to ask questions and be a good listener.  If you are carpooling with a group of kids in the back of your car, then it can be even more fun.  The group of kids will start telling each other stories and talking about things that happened at school.  It is amazing what you can learn about the school dynamics just from driving carpool.

Now that you’ve had your fun in the car, you can also get some things accomplished with the kids.  Car time can be learning time.  It is a great time to quiz on spelling words or make up basic math problems for them to answer.  You can also work on any memorizing that the kids need to do like the States and Capitals or bones in the body.  One of the benefits is that besides the child that you are quizzing, everyone in the car is learning…. the younger siblings are learning the material and the older siblings are learning to help with the teaching and explaining.  In the end, everyone is just a little smarter, even Mom.

So, put down your cell phone and make the most of your time in the car with your kids.  You can get some things accomplished and…have a little fun.
