Let’s Get GOing!!

It’s January!  For many, January means it’s time to set new goals for the upcoming year.  For Professional Organizers, January means it’s ‘GO’ Month. (Get Organized)  So, if one of your goals for 2011 is to ‘get organized’, let me help you get going!!

First off, let’s make a distinction between a New Year’s Resolution and setting goals.  Making a verbal or mental resolution to ‘get organized’ can often fall victim to the statistic of New Year’s Resolutions, which shows that of the 45% of people who make New Year’s Resolutions, after six months, fewer than half those people who made resolutions have stuck with them.

I recommend putting your goals down on paper.  Make a written plan.  Resolve in writing.  There is something ‘confirming’ about putting your goals and plans on paper.  Success is on the side of ink on paper, so let’s go with that.

Secondly, if getting organized is your goal, be specific about what that means to you.  Are you speaking of your closets, your home office or your kitchen?  Starting broad is fine, but narrow things down and set dates.  For example, if you want to organize your kitchen this year, write down specific benchmarks along with dates.  Your written plan could look something like this:

Organize Kitchen in 2011

                        Task:                                          By:

1.  Clean & sort all drawers                            End of January

2.  Clean & organize all cupboards                  End of  February

3.  Disassemble & clean all lighting fixtures      End of March

4.  Pantry – sort, purge, donate                     End of April

5.  Refrigerator – empty, clean, organize         Every Odd Numbered Month

So, ponder your plan a bit, write it down and be specific.  Post it where you can see it – the visual will keep it from slipping into the abyss of broken resolutions.  Most importantly – Get GOing!!  You’ll be supremely pleased with yourself for setting and attaining your goals.  If you need help, click on the ‘Panel of Experts’ on this website and contact one of us.  We’d be honored to help you reach your goals for 2011.
