ADVICE FROM A CLUTTER PROFESSIONAL

“I’m an intelligent, successful person, but I can’t seem to get myself organized!  I’m desperate!” a prominent business owner revealed.  Sound familiar?

Over the years, I’ve heard this more and more, and have come to realize that the answer is very basic.  Many people were never “taught” the fundamental principles of organizing in their offices or their homes.  Being disorganized isn’t a disease, it is a postponed decision.  There are many people in the world who need help getting organized in certain areas of their lives.

Although organizational skills are not part of a formal educational program in most occupations, numerous books and magazine or newspaper articles can be used for informative organizing tips.  If you truly want to be organized, there are many proven systems to help you.  Once you know these systems and apply them every day of your life, you will be organized.

If your work area is piled high at the end of each day, give yourself the “gift or organization.”  Spend just 15 minutes organizing one area in your office each day of the workweek.  Choose one area for example your desktop, desk drawer, files, one pile of papers and Toss, Act, File or Delegate your way through the paperwork in this area.  After 15 minutes, stop and go back to your regular work.  At the end of a week you’ll be 1 ¼ hours closer to your goal of becoming better organized!

Not much you may say, but at the end of a month you’ll have spent approximately 5 hours organizing and at the end of this year, it will have amounted to 60 hours!  Now that’s progress!

Have a place for everything!  Research shows the average person spends 150 hours a year looking for information.  Imagine what you could do with the time you waste looking for that extended service contract you need to get your laptop repaired, looking for your car keys, your glasses, or the birthday card you bought last week but never got in the mail?

If you don’t know you have it, or if you can’t find it when you need it, it’s of no value to you.  As a matter of fact, it may be costing you a lot more than you realize….if you’re like so many who go out and buy another of the same item because you cannot find the one you already own.

If you’re wasting time looking for things and you’re out of time, space, money or energy, there’s no better time than NOW to simplify your life!
